2017 Matthew Nena Scholarship

About Matthew...

Matthew Nena was a 17 year old high school senior at Batavia High School.  He was a top student and great athlete, who participated in football, baseball and track and field.  He was applying to colleges to study engineering. But even more important than his academic and athletic achievements, he was a very kind person. He treated his friends, peers, teachers, coaches and family with compassion and respect, and he encouraged others to do the same. Matthew volunteered in various capacities, including the Interact Club, United Way, and through religious education classes. He went on a weeklong youth mission trip in June 2016, to West Virginia, and he came back with such a wonderful feeling of helping others, after working on the home of a 92 year old woman named Coralee. Upon his return, he told his family, “It doesn't just help others when you do nice things for other people; it helps you, as well.”
